Skills and Training

We believe that our future success is reliant upon investment made now through the development of skills and training of both our current employees and the next generation. This wider perspective, coupled with a proactive approach has led to the development of an innovative Modern Apprenticeship for Roofing in House Building.

Due to the shortage of skills in the industry, we have created a new roofing Skills Academy. The Forster Academy is a custom designed centre delivering specialist modern apprenticeship qualifications, geared specifically for new-build housing and solar PV.  This will help to address the acute skills shortage in the construction industry while recruiting new entrants and up skilling and qualifying the existing workforce. It aims to raise current standards whilst enriching and growing the construction talent pool, ensuring best practice and driving innovation.

In 2014 we committed to taking on 24 apprentices throughout a four year period. The first five are already in place and a further seven are to be taken on later this year. We are also introducing a new Level 2 specialist up-skilling programme – ‘Slating for new-build’ – which will fully qualify our workforce.

At the end of 2014 our Human Resources Director, Maureen Douglas was appointed by Nick Boles, Minister of State for Skills and Equalities onto the Construction Industry Training Board’s (CITB) new Board of Trustees, where she will have the opportunity to work with the new board to provide effective outcomes to the industry skills challenge across the UK.

We have also received a number of awards in recognition of our partnership work with local schools and colleges. In 2008 Angus College received an SQA Star Award for Innovation for its partnership with us and Brechin High School in successfully delivering a construction vocational qualification, under the Skills for Work programme.  We also achieved an Angus Council Partnership Excellence award the same year in recognition of our involvement in delivering the programme at our training centre in Brechin.  In 2014 we won the same award, this time for our work experience/employer endorsement model.

Earlier this year we were awarded the IIP Investors in Young People award.  IIP have subsequently approached us about creating a case study showcasing our approach to developing young people.
