Priority Care’s solar journey with Forster Group
Futureproofing care homes with sustainable energy
Priority Care, a family-run care provider with six care homes across Scotland’s east coast, has always been committed to delivering exceptional care for its residents. In 2023, the company took a decisive step toward energy sustainability by installing solar panels at two of its Dundee-based care homes – Harestane and St Columba’s. The move was driven by rising energy costs and a long-term vision to futureproof its buildings.
As part of a wider company investment, Priority Care appointed Forster Group to install solar systems across its care homes. Director Andy Prior had been considering solar power for some time, but the dramatic surge in utility expenses prompted him to take action.
“Solar power was something we had been considering for a while, but the huge increase in energy costs was the real driver to push ahead with our plans,” said Andy Prior. “In order to provide exceptional care for our residents, we need to futureproof our buildings. This requires significant investment, so it’s crucial we make them as energy efficient as possible.”
Forster Group completed the first phase of installations at Harestane Care Home in December 2023, equipping the site with:
· 144 solar panels with a total capacity of 58.32 kWp
· Two inverters to convert DC power into AC power
· A projected nine-year payback period based on energy savings
· 75% of solar-generated power supporting essential amenities, including a hydrotherapy swimming pool, commercial kitchen, and laundry
In February 2024, Forster Group installed an additional system at St Columba’s Care Home, which featured:
· 136 roof-mounted panels with a capacity of 57.12 kWp
· Two inverters to optimise energy conversion
· A projected seven-year payback period
· 90% of solar energy powering the home’s fully electric heating system and commercial laundry facilities
Building on this success, Priority Care commissioned Forster Group for a third installation at Drumdarroch Care Home in Insch, Aberdeenshire, in 2024. The latest system included:
· 148 roof-mounted panels with a total system capacity of 59.94kWp
· Three inverters to optimise energy conversion
· Annual energy generation of 40,890kWh with estimated 10-year payback period
· CO₂ savings of 17,583kg in the first year, and 474,733kg over 30 years
Priority Care’s decision to appoint Forster Group was rooted in the company’s extensive experience and expertise in solar installations.
“We wanted to make sure we were choosing the most experienced and reliable provider. Choosing to work with Forster Group was an easy decision as the team are incredibly knowledgeable and professional,” Andy Prior remarked.
The impact: Cost savings and long-term sustainability
Since the solar installations went live, Priority Care has seen a 20% reduction in energy costs, allowing them to better manage utility expenses across their operations. The projected payback periods and energy savings have met expectations, confirming the value of the investment.
Encouraged by these results, Priority Care now plans to roll out solar installations across additional care homes, recognising the long-term sustainability and cost-efficiency benefits.
For care providers considering solar energy, Andy Prior offers a key piece of advice: if budget permits, opt for an in-roof installation. While the payback period may take longer, the long-term maintenance benefits and improved aesthetics make it a worthwhile investment.
